âHeâs right,â Jade said without the slightest hint of emotion. Despite a trip to a salon to dye her hair a dark auburn, buying more clothes than sheâd likely wear, and ordering updated living room furniture, the excitement of the makeover step was fading and she felt empty. Her emotional roller coaster had bottomed out. She pulled a marshmallow from the fire theyâd built in the pit in her backyard and blew out the flame. âI really wasnât a good wife.â
âScrew that,â Taylor said. âDonât let him get into your head.â
âIâm not,â Jade countered as she squished the melted ball between two chocolate-covered graham crackers. âBut he is right. I put my career above my family. I donât know why I didnât see this coming sooner. Actually, yes I do. Because I was self-centered and obsessed with my job.â
Taylor waited until her marshmallow was black before blowing out the flame. âThat doesnât excuse what he did. He chose to lie to you about your marriage.â
Since Jade enjoyed making the treats but didnât eat them, she handed her creation to Darby. âThatâs not what I mean. I know his leaving like this was wrong, but we didnât have the life he wanted. I didnât give him what he needed.â
âDonât fall into that trap,â Darby said. âEvery woman falls into that trap. Men screw up, and we take the blame. You have to keep the house clean and the husband organized and the kids educated. And what does the man do? Work fifty hours and call it even. Bullshit.â
Jade smirked. âThatâs the point, Darby. Thatâs the role I was filling. Nick took care of the house and the kids. I worked more like sixty hours a week and came home too exhausted to be part of my family. I wasnât there. For him or the kids. He did all the so-called mom stuff that I wasnât around to do. Thereâs something to be said for that, right?â
âIâll send him a cake,â Taylor stated flatly.
âWith arsenic icing,â Darby added.
Jade smiled. Not because she wanted to poison Nick but because having friends defend her felt really nice. Suddenly, she was struck by something that caused her heart to nearly seize in her chest. Jade looked from Darby to Taylor and nearly started crying again. âCan I confess something to you guys?â
âYes, those pants are awful,â Darby said. âItâs a damn good thing we bought you some new clothes.â
Jade looked down at her sage green capris.
âShut up,â Taylor warned.
âOh, were we not discussing her dreadful fashion?â Darby blinked, but the hint of a smile proved she was trying to lighten the mood.
âSays the lost extra from Grease,â Taylor said lightly.
Jade had to bite her lip so she didnât laugh when Darby stuck her tongue out at Taylor. âI was going to say that Iâm so glad I met you guys. Youâve stood by me when you didnât have to. I crashed todayâcoming home with his things gone made this real. You didnât have to come running to help me, but you did, and I really, really appreciate it.
